Oakham A-310 MAP Machine
Lima Food Machinery are very proud to be exclusive UK agents for the Oakham Fresh Pack Packaging System, which is ideal for bulk packs of product.
Poultry for example, is an ideal system for M.A.P as traditionally shelflife of fresh poultry is very short and many products have to be frozen to meet the demands of even short distribution requirements. Poultry is being gas flushed, both in whole birds or portions, or in other cases overwrapped with PVC films on foam food trays inside a master batch.
Fresh chickens packed in a Oakham A310 M.A.P system can achieve a shelf life up to 2 times and sometimes even longer than non M.A.P processed birds. A fresh chicken packed on a foam tray overwrapped with PVC may have a shelflife of approximately 6 days if slaughtered and processed under ideal chilled conditions. Introducing the Oakham A310 system, the bird under the same processing conditions may be kept from 10 days to 12 days and receive another 5 days after opening the M.A.P pouch. This process allows better production planning and reduces the need for everyday deliveries to the customers. The packaging of M.A.P poultry does not require additional space as the equipment can be installed over an existing conveyor system and does not slow the production stream.
Other current applications of the Oakham A310 include Meat, Cheese, Fish, Bakery Products, Eggs, Nuts, Coffee, Fruit & Vegetables.

In a recent press release to announce Greggs and Macsweens in a joint venture, James Macsween took the time to mention our site. Many thanks for that James!
The article reads:
A Scottish bakery chain has teamed up with a haggis specialist to create a tasty twist on Scotland’s national dish, which is set to rival the Scotch pie.
Greggs and Macsween created the Haggis Pie just in time for St Andrew’s day. It is made with Gregg’s special scotch pie shell, filled with the finest Macsween haggis and topped with creamy mashed potatoes.
Macsween has recently invested in a new slicer (Treif Puma CE) which has an out-feed conveyor and allowed them to rapidly produce vast quantities of haggis portions that fit perfectly in the Greggs pie shell.
Macsween has also invested in a state of the art metal detector, Loma IQ3, which has variable frequency detection and will enable the company to produce a variety of products, from Greggs pies to retail packs of sliced haggis.
Commenting on this additional capability, James Macsween said: “We are now able to produce at least 200 slices per minute, with an accuracy of 1 mm. Sourcing the slicer couldn’t have been easier, thanks to a fantastic website called Buy it, Sell it, Want it (www.buyitsellitwantit.co.uk).”
“We have never done slicing of this nature before, and hope that it will be a great enabler in tackling new markets.”
The Haggis Pie will be available in all of the 165 Greggs stores across Scotland from the 26th November until the 1st December.

Don’t Just Serve, Sell!
Don’t be shy, tell them about it!
Before we start, I am taking for granted throughout this article that everything you currently sell has your own personal stamp of approval that your staff are well presented, cabinet is well laid out, goods are fresh and are of good quality and reasonably priced.
I would like to start with a question if I may. Are you proud of your shop?, your staff?, your products? If so, it should be your biggest challenge to find as many ways as possible to tell your potential customers about what wonderful goods you have and the high quality service you can offer them. Don’t sit back and wait for customers to come through the door. Go out and get more of them! If the answer is no to my questions, please take a close look at what you are not happy with and make changes now! When you have total belief in your products, selling is easy.
The Counter
In my day to day life, I am still amazed to find businesses who employ poorly trained counter assistants to look after your most precious commodity, your customers. You may have seen examples of a fish & chip shop, where a customer waiting in a long queue, eventually gets served, “ Haddock and chips please” he says, “ Fish is off!. Next!” comes the reply from the gum chewing couldn’t care less assistant. Or the girl in the paper shop, on the mobile phone carrying on a conversation with someone else without looking up at you. Thankfully, I have never witnessed this sort of attitude in a butchers shop, however lets not be complacent!
Thought: Beware! The battle of whether you make profits or losses depend greatly on what happens in this part of the shop. Your shop should be fun, informative and fulfil your customers needs.
Selling & Marketing Ideas
Walking, talking displays!
Make good use of your employees! Why not encourage your counter staff in the shop to wear a large badge highlighting the weeks special offer. This includes you as well!. The employee with the most sales in the week wins a prize Tip: Make it fun, and don’t skimp on the prize; make it a worthwhile item to win.
Joint Ventures
Why not get together with a local fishmonger, fruiter and visit hotels and restaurants in your area. Sell the benefits of a working partnership, and agree a deal together on supplying these establishments and highlight the hotels or restaurants in each of your shops. Promote local companies and produce.
Ever thought of doing a deal with a local fitness or slimming club? Format a range of low fat healthy products to sell to their members, and offer to promote the health or slimming club in your shop and vice versa. You can also offer to do cookery sessions at their group meetings. Ever thought of asking a chef from a local restaurant to help you to put together some recipes for your customers, or help with a cookery demonstration?.

MTJ Bans Advertising

The Meats Trade Journal,the trade magazine for butchers, has banned Buy it! Sell it! Want it? from advertising in it's publications. A spokesman for the MTJ states "It is direct competition to our own commercial section".
The MTJ is published by the William Reed Group,who control most of the trade magazines in the meat trade. This monopoly of coverage and censorship can't be good for any trade, and this banning of the website shows that they are not an impartial organisation and places its own interests very much to the forefront, to the detriment of its readers who are mainly butchers and processors.
Buy it! Sell it! Want it? spends a large percentage of its revenue on advertising and marketing,to help highlight the second hand machinery and equipment that you want to sell or buy. We will endeavour to do this, despite the actions of the MTJ.
